Replacement Carbon Filters

Fumecare Filters can supply replacement carbon filters using our own carbon filter manufacturing facility. We produce quality manufactured carbon filters for our own Fumecare range of fume hoods as well as other manufacturers types of cabinets. Our Filters are manufactured in an accredited ISO9001-2015 facility.

We also offer a a full filter delivery, fitting and testing service along with full service operation on all makes of Fume Hood and Forensic cabinets.

Polypropylene Carbon Filters

Fumecare use welded polypropylene cases produced in our own facility allowing us to provide a quick turnaround as well as the ability to make custom sizes.

Filter fibres trap contaminants using three primary methods:

Interception takes place when a contaminant particle passes within the distance equal to one particle’s radius of a filter fibre, resulting in it touching the fibre and being removed from the airflow. Particles further than one particle radius from a fibre will not be trapped. Inertial impaction occurs when a large particle, unable to adjust to the change in air direction near a filter fibre, becomes trapped on the fibre. The particle’s inertia ensures that it continues along its original path instead of circumventing the fibre, resulting in its capture. Diffusion relies on the Brownian motion of gas particles. Small particles (typically 0.1 am or less) tend to travel on a streamline in an erratic fashion, making random motions as they interact with gas molecules. This erratic motion causes the contaminant particles to become stuck to filter fibres.

We Can Also Supply…

HEPA Filters

High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters and ultra-low particulate air (ULPA) filters are air filters designed to trap a vast majority of very small particulate contaminants from an air stream.

Metal Framed Filters

Some manufacturers use robust steel framed carbon filters as standard.  Fumecare can also supply steel framed carbon filters where required and are manufactured using high quality zintec steel with full folded edges requiring no welded edges to damage the zintec coating. All our filters are hermetically sealed in clear bags prior to boxing and shipping.

Filter Condition Alarms

The Fumecare Activated Carbon Condition Alarm can easily be added to your existing filtered fume cabinet.  The alarm is easy to calibrate and will then constanly monitor the cabinet exhaust for signs of Hydrocarbon breakthrough as the filter nears saturation. It will detect a wide range of Hydrocarbons and give a visual and audible warning.

The Concept of Adsorption

The main principle on which the filtration of gas molecules is based on the concept of adsorption. The two main processes by which adsorption takes please are: Physical & Chemisorption

Physical

Physical adsorption is non-specific and adsorption of the gas molecule is achieved by diffusion or adsorption/condensation using Van Der Waals’ forces. The gas molecules move into the filter and diffuse into the pore and are captured in the pore by the Van Der Waals’ force, the molecules penetrate into the pores, impact the walls and are trapped. The number of pores present in the carbon is vast and therefore the total surface area is extremely large. The specific surface is the measure of the surface area per unit of weight, which is m2/g. An indication on the carbon is use is that 5Gms of carbons represents a surface area roughly equivalent to a football pitch.

Chemisorption

The physical process of adsorption is followed by the chemical adsorption (chemisorption). This is the chemical reaction in which the two substances react together and the resultant chemical is trapped on the filter material. The impregnation of filter media can greatly extend the range of gases that can be removed from the air stream. As well as our standard activated carbon, we carry a range of impregnated activated carbon optimised for the adsorption of acids, ammonia, amines, sulphur compounds, formaldehyde, mercury and other compounds. With details of your intended application we can use your in-house knowledge and experience to recommend the most suitable carbon of your use.
